Hoozuki Terashita (寺下 ほおずき,Terashita Hōzuki) is a 12-year-old middle-school student of Minoseki Academy. In order to coat and adorn katana scabbards (saya), Hoozuki is studying about becoming a lacquerer (nuri-shi). As a genius, she picks up on the basics quickly, and applies her learning by using an original style which involves the use of non-traditional vivid colors, something that troubles her more traditionalist teachers. It seems like she cannot recognize a person's face, and has the notable trait of being able to recognize a person from the scabbard it uses and calling a person as the color of its scabbard.

The name Hoozuki means "ground cherry" (ほおずき) in Hiragana.
Hoozuki's surname Terashita means "temple" (寺) (tera) and "under, below" (下) (shita).
